Celebrating Nature Through Art – Bamboo Carving by Cheung Pak-yue

Bamboo is indigenous to China. Throughout history, Chinese have had an affinity to bamboo, using it for utensils and works of art. The art of bamboo carving developed and reached maturity in the Tang Dynasty. It holds an important place in the history of Chinese art and craft and continues to flourish to date.

Mr. Cheung Pak-yue is one of today’s rare bamboo carving masters and excels in Liuqing carving or bamboo skin carving. For decades, Cheung has immersed himself in the study of Chinese art and culture and attained a high level of artistic proficiency. Using carving knives as brush and bamboo as paper, his creations are reminiscent of paintings. Many of his exquisite and sophisticated works are inspired by nature, respectful to but not bound by tradition.

Thanks to serendipity, it is with great pleasure for Chi Lin Nunnery to showcase the bamboo carving works of Mr. Cheung Pak-yue and to compile this album of selected items to promote the appreciation of this culture heritage.
